Held annually on January 27, Holocaust Memorial Day marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, in 1945.
It is an international day to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution of other groups, as well as genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
As this year’s theme is ‘ordinary people’, commemorations will focus on how ordinary people were involved in all aspects of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides, whether as perpetrators, bystanders, witnesses or rescuers.
At 4pm on January 27, people across the UK will light candles and put them in their windows, while some buildings and landmarks will also be lit up in purple as a sign of solidarity.
More than 10 departments including FCDO, HMRC and DHSC will be observing the anniversary.
The Ministry of Defence’s Holocaust Memorial Day event will take place on Thursday 26 January.
Speakers include Dr Martin Stern and Mr Sabit Jakupovic who are survivors of the Holocaust and the Bosnian genocide respectively.
