Mining and quarrying: a new kind of work

Category: Returnships (Returning to work)

Mining involves a lot more than sending men down mineshafts. All kinds of jobs and roles are now available, including secretarial, driving, IT and finance positions. Engineers and technicians are still the most common.

Varied work among the stones

Depending on what route you take there are various avenues to follow and explore.

The geological society indicates the division of roles in mining. Exploration for mineral resources requires the employment of engineers, geologists and geophysicists, among other roles.

Working conditions and salaries in mining and quarrying

The Mining and Quarrying industry often requires working long hours, or shift work. However, with a strong and determined mindset and good bill of health, the financial rewards can be great. Petroleum Geologists, for example, with only one or two years’ experience can earn an average annual salary of around £100,000.

Mining and Quarrying is mostly now reserved to qualified or highly qualified positions. A bachelor's degree is the norm for the most highly paid positions. You can still walk into the industry fresh out of school, but the salary is significantly less.

There are various certificates and diplomas available, catered to a variety of roles to pursue. A number of universities across the UK offer courses to obtain the qualifications you’ll need. The Health & Safety Executive also outlines some criteria and qualifications needed to enter the industry.

Emerging diversity in mining and quarrying

Another thing that has changed in more recent years is the demographic of the mining and quarrying workforce. Not only does mining no longer mean men in dungarees, carrying caged canaries, it’s also no longer just men. The International Women in Mining network has encouraged many women to join the sector and introduced incentives and initiatives. Australia already has a Mining workforce where 20 percent are female.
