Created by VERCIDA for Taylor Wimpey

Hi, my name is Mohit Mashar and I am a Quantity Surveyor for the South East Region.

A QS is essentially an accountant on a construction project and is responsible for making sure the project is delivered within budget and to a high quality. I joined Taylor Wimpey through the management trainee scheme as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor in September 2021, and since then been promoted twice to Assistant Quantity Surveyor and most recently Quantity Surveyor.

Before construction, I used to work as a recruiter, trying to headhunt QSs for my clients. I used to be fascinated by the role of the QS and always thought it would be a career I would love to pursue myself. Finally, I decided to take the leap and applied for the trainee program at Taylor Wimpey in September 2021.

The diversity in the role is brilliant. One day you could be on site, meeting with sub-contractors to look at progress, next day you could be in a workshop with architects to solve design-related queries. I also enjoy the attention to detail required for this role and the meticulous nature, as every penny counts on a project.

Taylor Wimpey has been incredibly supportive of my development since I joined the company. They gave me an opportunity to join the business with no sector-specific experience and even sponsored me to go to university to do an MSc in Quantity Surveying. Since joining, I have been promoted twice and been made to feel as though my development is important to them as a company and they are willing to invest in my career. Whilst the role of a QS can be high-pressured, I have found the culture of my office fairly relaxed and collaborative which helps manage the stress of the job.

Currently, I am part of the Health & Wellbeing committee and the Careers Fare group which looks to promote construction and Taylor Wimpey as the industry/employer of choice to school leavers and A-Level students.

I was the 1st member of my family to attend university. My parents were both born and grew up in India and moved to the UK in their early 30s. I was advised from an early age that my aim should be to go to university and study a STEM or a Finance-related subject. I had no idea growing up about the diverse range of roles available within construction and in fact, it is not merely an industry for people with a trade background. I would love to raise awareness about this to other kids who come from a similar background as myself and let them know about everything construction has to offer.

Think carefully about what you apply to do at university and if it is really the career path you want in the future. Apprenticeships and work experience could be equally beneficial if you want a career in construction.
