Well, my role was advertised with an apprenticeship. Brilliant, I thought, a chance of a career in a new field with recognised training and qualification included. What more could I ask for? Thankfully, I got the job! However, before applying I did phone to check that there wasn’t an upper age limit on taking an apprenticeship. I believed, wrongly, that apprenticeships are aimed at young people, not any age group and I do think the name apprenticeship brings with it a whole host of connotations that are simply not true.
The introduction to the apprenticeship started off slowly to allow new learners to get used to studying again and become familiar with the programme, online platform and expectations which was brilliant as it ensured we were not overwhelmed. I had a number of tutors throughout the course and two coaches who were always on hand if I had any questions. I loved returning to studying and the learning helped underpin the knowledge needed for my role. I was fully supported in my apprenticeship time by my line manager and team, and I would smile when someone from the wider business asked why I am online on my apprenticeship day. It demonstrated the level of support for apprenticeships and that the business appreciates and is invested in staff’s learning and development.
There are a couple of tips I would share with anyone who is just starting out on their apprenticeship:
So, my advice to you, if you are thinking about doing an apprenticeship is go for it! I’m so glad I did.
