Jourden Langhorn is a manager in the Risk Aggregation Team. He explains why awareness – and management – of mental health at work is so important.
Mental health is something I’ve spoken about to a lot of people at Brit and many of those people have some challenges they are working within some cases these are surprisingly significant.
Brit can support you in providing counselling through the employee assistance programmes, as well as BUPA who also provide mental wellness support in the UK. Perhaps at a simpler level, if you really want to help people, you need to make mental health approachable as a topic. Brit’s manager mental health awareness training is important. Even if it makes a manager 10% more aware, or a team member slightly more comfortable in raising a concern, it’s worth it.
It is one thing communicating to people that they can have time and space if they need it. It is another thing embedding that culturally – so when someone who needs time is told that they have an urgent deadline, they still feel it’s acceptable to push back and prioritise their own mental wellbeing. It’s a long road, but the fact that we are on it and making such an investment is great.
