Originally from Osun State in the southwestern part of Nigeria Oluwakemi grew up in Ibadan, Oyo state (the largest city in West Africa). Osun State belongs to the Yoruba tribe and Yorubas which Oluwakemi describes as “very accommodating, sociable, and well known as the party-loving tribe of Nigeria due to their glamorous way of celebrating parties.”
Oluwakemi Akiode, IT Analyst Intern
What does Oluwakemi enjoy about her culture?
“Even though I am Yoruba, I am not the most avid party-going individual. I however love to dress up in colourful African attires and one of my favourite pastimes is sourcing Nigerian fabrics and sewing them into bespoke outfits for myself and my immediate family. I have manifested the industrious nature of the average Nigerian by developing culinary, fashion and music (even though I only sing in my kitchen now!) skills over the years.”
And how is the internship going?
“It has been an insightful learning and growing experience working at Tesco Bank these past few weeks. I have met amazing people who are always willing to provide guidance, support, and encouragement when needed. Working at Tesco Bank has afforded me the opportunity to put into practice some of the things I have learnt at university and also challenge me to continually develop my analytical and critical thinking skills.”
