IEDP discusses Religion and Belief in the workplace
Category: Industry News, Religious beliefs, gender, Leadership
Part sponsored by Diversity Jobs, Thursday 28th November saw the first of 4 one day seminars organised by the Institute of Equality & Diversity Practitioners. The event in London was themed on Religion and Belief and drew together around 60 diversity orientated individuals from, largely, public sector organisations.
The morning session was based on a series of "expert witness" talks giving different religious and secular perspectives on equality issues and giving the personal experiences and perspectives of the speakers. The panel were then questioned by the audience so that a dialogue between speakers and the delegates took place.
In the afternoon the group formed into four separate discussion groups to ensure there was a more intensive debate between delegates in a particular area of interest to them. For example disability within the context of belief. The intention was to allow delegates to better understand how different organisations were dealing with the competing interests of workers and indeed debate if organisations should always respond to the concerns that are expressed.
Further events will be run regionally from February to May with themes of LBGT, race and disability issues.
We are looking forward to being a part of the next seminar on Monday 24th February 2014 on LGBT equality. Two panels of speakers, such as LGBT activist Dawn Jutton and Director of BiCon Continuity Ltd Natalya Dell, will share the findings that they have made in their work, and how it intersects with other protected characteristics.
