Honoring Men Month

HONOURING MEN MONTH

November is Honouring Men Month and a time to support and raise awareness for men’s mental and physical health. Where organisations have made provisions for employee mental health they may find that men are less likely to access these services due to societal views and stigma around mental health issues in men. We believe that it’s time for this stigma to end as mental health has no gender and everyone deserves to access the help they need.

Here are 5 ways that organisations can promote men’s mental and physical health:

  • Encourage connection within the workforce. Catching up regularly and making time for one another is a great way to promote good mental well-being.
  • Talking about struggles. Creating a safe environment where men feel supported in opening up about their mental health struggles to a trusted professional or colleague is crucial to ensuring everyone gets access to mental health provisions. There is often a barrier to men accessing mental health services due to social stigma meaning that many problems are left unresolved and can worsen.
  • Educate on the dangers and warning signs of prostate cancer. Knowing the facts and signs, numbers and personal risk can help save lives.
  • Encourage fitness within the workforce. Promoting movement within the office or incentives for those that cycle/walk to work, having an in-office gym or membership deal are all ways that an organisation can help to improve employee mental health.
  • Support charities that are working with men’s health in mind i.e. mental health charities as well as charities raising money for prostate cancer. Participating in Movember as an organisation is also a great way to show your support.

At VERCIDA we are proud supporters of Movember and we are striving for a world where men feel supported in maintaining good mental and physical health, especially in the workplace. Moreover, November is also a time where we can highlight positive male role models and raise awareness of how men can also improve gender relations and promote equality for women too. This month we want to #BreakTheStigma around men’s mental health. Everyone has mental health, good or bad, and so every person deserves to access mental health services when needed.
