Religious Beliefs

Spring is on the way, and so too is the wonderful Holi Festival celebration at the Oriental Museum on Saturday 23 March, 12 noon – 5pm.

Holi involves throwing brightly coloured powders over friends and relatives to celebrate the victory of good over evil, the end of winter and the arrival of spring.

Also known as the Indian Festival of Colours, Holi involves throwing brightly coloured powders over friends and relatives to celebrate the victory of good over evil, the end of winter and the arrival of spring.

You are invited to book tickets to attend the event and will receive one free bag of environmentally-friendly, skin-kind coloured powder to join in the powder throw. Visitors of all ages will be invited to dance to a mix of Bhangra hits and upbeat pop, while getting covered from head to toe in brightly coloured powders. Additional powder will be available to purchase on the day.

The Holi Festival will also include arts and craft activities, a retelling of the traditional story of Holi and a chance to cast off any regrets from the previous year in the Pit of Regret. There will be delicious Indian food available to purchase on the day too.

Charlotte Spink, Learning Coordinator based at the Oriental Museum said: “It’s always a delight to work alongside our fantastic team of student volunteers and welcome families to Holi Festival. Everyone is welcome and be prepared to get messy!”

International student Mitali, President of the Durham University Hindu Society who is co-organising the event explained “Holi is such a joyful time of year and it’s exciting to be able to celebrate in Durham and welcome in the spring season.”

Tickets cost £3 per person (children under 2 are free) which includes entry to a timed powder throw and entry to the Oriental Museum
