Experiencing the menopause
Experiencing the menopause is different for everyone, with the only certainty being that half the population will experience some if not all the huge range of symptoms at some point in their life. This is often at a time when other pressures are present, such as caring for elderly parents or juggling work and home responsibilities, which results in a highly stressful period. Support may be needed at work, but this can be difficult for both the individual and their manager to navigate.
GSK and the menopause
At GSK we have recognised this and worked hard to provide a range of services to support both the individual and their line manager during this challenging time.
We have brought the menopause dialogue into the open with events to inform, engage and educate. In 2021 we hosted Davina McCall for a frank and thorough International Menopause Day panel discussion.
Helpful updates are shared on Workplace in our employee resource group, the Women’s Leadership Initiative.
We also provide information and resources relating to menopause on our Keep Growing Campus learning platform. This includes links to external support, Workplace support groups and guidance for managers on how to best support our employees.
Access to medical care and advice can be a crucial part of an individual’s journey. Members of the GSK UK Healthcare Plan can now benefit from improved menopause support and treatment that is covered under the private healthcare package.
The new plan provides cover for private consultations, as well as further menopause-related diagnostics to help individuals obtain the specific support they need. This helps members to be diagnosed correctly, undergo appropriate investigations (if required) and be given clinical advice on how to manage symptoms, medication and their wellbeing.
If counselling is required, this is also available through private healthcare or through the existing Employee Assistance Programme (EAP).
Why this is important to GSK
Our aim at GSK is to maintain an open and transparent working environment, where employees and managers alike feel comfortable having open discussions about the menopause and are aware of the options and support that is available.
Bringing menopause and all its challenges into the open, will help our GSK colleagues to perform at their best, continue to enjoy their career and get ahead together.
