For many non-binary people, being misgendered can be a daily occurrence, as someone who is seen as male presenting, this happens to me often. When someone uses the wrong pronouns, it can be a painful reminder that we’re not seen or understood for who we truly are. It can also lead to feelings of dysphoria and discomfort in our own skin. That’s why it’s so important for people to use the correct pronouns, whether they’re he/him, she/her, they/them, or any other gender-neutral option.
Using the right pronouns isn't just about being polite or politically correct, although those are certainly good reasons, it is about respecting someone’s identity, and acknowledging their right to exist in the world as they are. I’m fortunate that in my role in Capita, I feel accepted for who I am, and that I can bring my whole self to work.
By using someone’s correct pronouns, you’re sending a powerful message of acceptance and support. You’re saying, “I see you, and I accept you for who you are.”
