How to Get Noticed Without Asking | EVPeasy #16

Category: Career Resources

Career Resources.

Daniel Callaghan has cleaned, landscaped, sold books and done office junior work. He is now Employer Brand Manager at Payoneer, a profession he did not know existed until 2018.

On episode 16 of EVPeasy, he described how it happened, and it is worth paying attention to if you are in a job that does not quite fit you.

He was running social media at Thomson Reuters. The job was promoting legal products, events and services. But he kept noticing that any post featuring an actual employee outperformed the product content, so he started making them anyway. Posts about International Women’s Day, about people, about the company rather than the catalogue. Nobody asked him to. It was not what he was measured on.

Some months later a recruiter from the same company got in touch. Applications were up, they thought it was down to what he was posting, and could he be more deliberate about it. That conversation is the reason he has the career he has.

The useful part is not the luck. It is that he had made something visible. When a recruiter went looking for the cause of an unexplained rise in applications, there was a trail leading back to him. Had he kept the insight to himself, or raised it in a meeting and left it there, there would have been nothing to find.

Two things follow from that, whether you are job hunting or trying to move inside the company you are already in.
