Fire Cadets in Stoke-on-Trent have celebrated completion of their course in a special passing out parade.

"The young people have worked incredibly hard and shown a great deal of commitment during the Fire Cadets+ course. They have been a real credit both to themselves and to the Service, taking part in a number of fundraising events and local community projects." -Crew Manager Geoff Owen, a cadet instructor at Hanley

Northern Service Delivery Group Manager Brian Moss and Crew Manager Geoff Owen, a cadet instructor at Hanley, presented certificates to the youngsters during a special ceremony at Hanley Community Fire Station on Sunday August 27. The 12 young people also carried out a demonstration of their practical skills in front of their families.

A special Matthew Hollinshead memorial award was also presented to the most deserving cadet, Olivia Field, aged 17 from Meir. Matthew, a 16-year-old former Fire Cadet, died earlier this year after battling cancer and he will be remembered by this new annual award, presented by his mother Liz.

The 12 young people completed the Fire Cadets+ programme which started last October and was held at Hanley Community Fire Station.

The 14 to 17-year-olds have been taught operational skills such as hose running, water drills, breathing apparatus and casualty extrication.

They have also learnt life skills including healthy living, how to handle money and job application techniques.

During the Cadet+ scheme the participants gained the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award certificate, which is acknowledged by employers and universities as a mark of real personal development and achievement.

Geoff Owen said: "The young people have worked incredibly hard and shown a great deal of commitment during the Fire Cadets+ course. They have been a real credit both to themselves and to the Service, taking part in a number of fundraising events and local community projects.

“It was an honour to present them with their certificates and to celebrate all that they have achieved. It was a pleasure to welcome Liz Hollinshead to present the new award in memory of her son Matthew, who was an outstanding Fire Cadet and a very brave young man."

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service are the first service to launch a Fire Cadet scheme which integrates fire service activities with the expectations of the Duke of Edinburgh’s award enabling each cadet to achieve the award through participation on the programme.

It is now recruiting for its next courses which run at the following times and stations:

Hanley Community Fire Station - Tuesday from 5pm to 8.30pm (starting in November)

Tamworth Belgrave Community Fire Station - Saturday from 10am to 1.30pm (starting in September)
