My Story – Jonny Gray

My aunt once said to me that she had never met anyone more suited to the profession they ended up in. Very much the stereotypical child who becomes an engineer, I spent my summers building treehouses and my winters playing with Lego.

After a fortuitous interview for a different job on a different career path, the interviewer recommended that I rethink my choices; that half-hour interview became a life‑changing event. Not only did I obtain sponsorship to study Civil Engineering at Loughborough University, but over the years that followed I had the opportunity to work on the Reading Viaduct, Blackfriars Station, Whitechapel Station, Hinkley Point C, HS2, a suspension bridge in Rwanda, and even took a year off to travel the world.

I have also meandered through several roles, initially progressing from Site Engineer to Agent, before side‑stepping into Design and Engineering Management across a Principal Contractor, Sub‑Contractor, and now Client environment.

My Current Role

I am currently a Technical Engineering Manager in the Earthworks and Enabling Works team at the Sizewell C Nuclear Power Plant.

I am responsible for, or involved in, a broad range of topics including retaining walls that enable deep excavations, groundwater levels, earthing, and complex ground improvement utilising several geotechnical solutions. My biggest day‑to‑day challenge is understanding the impact these topics have on other works and coordinating the development of the design with all interfacing teams and individuals.

What Inspires Me?

My new role at Sizewell C has required a shift from my comfort zone of Reinforced Concrete works into the world of Geotechnical Engineering. It has certainly been challenging, but I find challenges energising. It is great to be given the opportunity to keep learning and to develop a broader skillset, especially one that is so critical to major infrastructure projects.

In the nuclear industry, I have seen countless brilliant individuals working incredibly hard to solve complex problems, and I truly believe the end results will enable greater energy security.
