Black History Month is one of the most prominent cultural celebrations in The Ethnic Minority Network's calendar.

The national theme this year is: Time for Change: Action Not Words.   As well as acknowledging the past, it's important to note that Black Britons are more than their contributions to the UK. It is also about everyone working together to improve the future with actions, not just words. The Ethnic Minority Network also calls on our friends and allies to stand up to racism and discrimination with us to achieve a better world for everyone.

BHM began life in February 1926 as Negro History Week in the US, created by Carter G. Woodson to address the world's silence on black achievements, and as part of a push to improve race relations. In February 1976, it became Black History Month.

BHM was started in the UK, led by Ghanaian born Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, an officer at the Greater London Council, in 1987. The founders decided on October to coincide with the  beginning of the school year. They wanted the annual event to offer young people a sense of self pride in celebrating black history, heritage and culture, and the iconic figures that have contributed so much.

"This year for Black History Month, the Ethnic Minority Network want to celebrate the present and look at how we can create a better future together that will empower Black people to be the best that they can be"
EMN Co-Chairs, Deborah George & Mukharram Mirbabaeva
