Community and kindness - Sikh values

Category: Race, Ethnicity & Heritage, Religious & Spiritual Beliefs

Religious Beliefs

I start the day thanking Waheguru (almighty). I have my alarm set to “Waheguru is waking you up” to remind me that every day is a new opportunity, a new chance. Then I do meditation while I stretch and do light physio. I have nerve damage from having long Covid, so I try to loosen up my muscles before I think about facing the challenges the day may bring. As I get dressed, I take a deep breath and, whilst focusing on Waheguru, I tie my Dastar (item of headdress associated with Sikhism). The Dastar is an article of faith that represents equality, honour, self-respect, courage, spirituality, and piety, and is very much a part of me. The morning routine helps me to face the day.

Mohinder Singh Bal - DWP

I have recently moved into DWP’s hub in the centre of Birmingham; it is an outstanding workspace. The building is designed to support a flexible and smart working environment, with different spaces to suit everyone. I recently visited the Wellbeing room and Reflection room (Ablution room) and was impressed with the inviting space for any faith or non-faith colleagues to make use of.

I work for the Finance Group on the European Social Fund as an appraisal manager. My role is to undertake a comprehensive assessment of potential project investments against agreed criteria and provide critically assessed considerations on value for money. We have supported hundreds of projects that go on to support individuals, who in turn help build better communities. Hearing their remarkable stories makes you realise just how vital the work we all do is, especially in such challenging times.

We work to make this an inclusive place where everyone belongs and can be at their best. I have found that DWP values align with the Sikh values. This is best illustrated in the Communal Kitchen of every Gurdwara (temple). Guru Nanak began a tradition of having people of all backgrounds sit and eat together – to create community and break the false divisions of social class. Gurdwaras have continued to offer free meals to anyone in need, despite a rise in food costs and numbers attending due to the rising cost of living. You can find out more by searching for Langar seva on YouTube.

Together with Susan Singh, I am proud of how we have developed the Sikhs in DWP Network which has grown to more than 429 members as far away as the Isle of Wight. Not everyone is from the Sikh faith, as our intention is for this network to be for everyone. It is about creating spaces where there are no silly questions and about raising awareness and understanding within our DWP community.

The biggest challenge was creating and maintaining a network where people belong and can have positive interactions. I bring my faith and belief into work, as this is not separate from me but an identity and way of life that has helped shape who I am. I want to help others bring their authentic selves to work too.

I am grateful for my two strong and independent daughters. Both make me think about how to be a better role model, challenge my own perceptions, and encourage me to consider how to be a better ally to help amplify their voices. I want to be more actively involved in their lives but am also apprehensive about the influence of social media. I want to ensure they are safe, and that I approach each interaction with love and compassion and can face challenges with good psychological and emotional strength.

If I could change one thing about the world, it would be for everyone to approach life with kindness and compassion. Kindness does not cost a thing, yet it is the richest gift you can give. This really resonates with me. There are so many people out there doing good in the world and the impact of that is far-reaching.
