I became disabled in 2012, whilst I was at Durham University. Since then, my lifestyle has changed significantly. However, one of the things that has been most eye-opening for me is the assumption members of the public can have that because you struggle walking, you’re not very intelligent or successful.
A high achieving disabled person once told me that disabled people have the potential to achieve just as much (if not more) than everyone else, they just have to do things in a different way. I thought that this was a positive mindset to have and have tried to adopt it throughout my career.
As the National Disability Awareness Network (DAWN) Co-Chair, I’ve worked hard to raise awareness of disability in the workplace, create an inclusive work culture, and developed a set of inclusive images to represent a range of people with disabilities across the firm."
