First DIO Fast-a-thon debuts

For the first time, DIO hosted a Fast-a-thon, on Thursday 21 March 2024, during Ramadan and around 20 people took part. 

It provided an opportunity for people to get involved, to support our Muslim colleagues and gain a personal insight of fasting and the impact it has on Muslims observing Ramadan at work. 

Ramadan is a time where cohesion and charity are strongly emphasised, and there was also an option to raise money for our nominated charities; The Conservation Volunteers and The Veterans’ Foundation. Participants could donate what they would usually spend on their or complete a sponsored fast. 

The fast-a-thon gained lots of positive feedback and over £220 was raised for our #DIOGivingBack charities.

Zubair Akram, RD CoE CoS Digital and Data team, said: 

“Thank you to everyone who took part in our first ever fast-a-thon. It was lovely to hear everyone’s experiences and what they took from the day.”

David Brewer, Chief Operating Officer, said: 

“The fast-a-thon is a wonderful initiative. I embraced the whole ethos of Ramadan and tried to abstain from negative thoughts as well as food. It really makes you think and appreciate what you have. I have told our suppliers about the fast-a-thon and no doubt they will use the idea too.”

Jenny Kelly, RD Utilities DH, said: 

“I fasted o get an appreciation of how Ramadan impacts individuals. I was amazed at how much fasting, even for one day, affected me physically and emotionally - it really reaffirmed the amazing dedication my Muslim colleagues demonstrate during their observation of Ramadan and by experiencing it myself, I am more aware and I feel I can support them better through their fast.”
