Faith & Belief committee at Defence Infrastructure Organisation

Category: Religious & Spiritual Beliefs

Religious Beliefs

Veronica Wilkinson chair of the Faith & Belief forum

Recently the Faith & Belief committee at DIO has recruited four new members.

The overview of the Faith & Belief network at DIO is:

  • Not about converting or competing with other Faiths or Beliefs but acceptance and inclusion
  • Ensuring that colleagues can bring their whole-self into the workplace and practice/observe their Faith or Belief
  • To encourage, support, respect, learn & develop a better understanding of Faith & Belief practised by colleagues and the communities we serve

The Faith & Belief committee members and their Champion want to ensure that they share information and good practice across DIO sites and the MOD by utilising blog posts, internal and external articles hosted on various D&I platforms, hard copy information and briefings at strategic meetings. The F&B champion Pam Roberts works on their behalf at a corporate level to cascade information to other D&I networks within the DIO and MOD.

There are a number of F&B events taking place every month within the DIO, some more recognisable than others. By being aware of these events and the importance that it may have to some of their colleague’s, celebrations can be organised along with agreed planned leave around these important dates if required.

The sharing of knowledge, skills and experience with other DIO networks is also key,  As a committee the F&B do not profess to be the fountain of all knowledge, but they do hope that they can share their rich lived experience of their individual religions/beliefs with colleagues and what it means to them as individuals.  An open dialogue enables understanding.

The F&B committee also wants to grow and increase its membership. The forum is open to all DIO colleagues and they want to share, understand individual ways of observing F&B and develop the forum. As a business and country, we are stronger together with knowledge.

Lastly the F&B committee wants to show DIO as an inclusive organisation so they can attract, recruit and retain the best talent. D&I forums are a great proposition to new employees, they also have great potential to shape the culture and behaviours of their organisations. By tapping the ideas, passion and knowledge of people who work there, effective networks can help both to create change in organisations, and to support leaders and managers in implementing it.

Bringing your whole self to working is essential – it is very difficult for individuals to leave parts of themselves at the front door of any workplace.  Why, because at some point during the working day our true authentic self seeps through. So, any three, if not all the components of Faith, Hope, Love, and Belief will be recognisable at work, because this is the Whole Self showing up!
