ENGIE named Wales’ most community focused contractor

Energy and regeneration specialist ENGIE has been recognised for its contribution to communities in Wales by the Chartered Institute of Housing.

ENGIE scooped the Community Focused Contractor trophy at the Welsh Housing Awards on Friday for its work in partnership with Merthyr Tydfil Housing Association (MTHA), in recognition of the commitment to the local community throughout the regeneration of Railway Close in Aberfan.

The £2.5million new housing development includes 23 homes - a mixture of flats and family houses for affordable rent. The work went beyond bricks and mortar, with ENGIE creating a programme of social value initiatives to ensure the surrounding community was positively impacted.

As part of this, ENGIE ran an Induction to Construction training programme with Communities First, Communities for Work and MTHA to help unemployed local people improve their career prospects by gaining work experience and interview skills.

Nick Jenkins, Business Development Manager at ENGIE’s Places & Communities division, said:
“Here at ENGIE, investing in the local community is at the heart of everything we do, so we’re delighted to have been recognised for our commitment to leaving a lasting legacy.

“Receiving this award is an incredible achievement and a testament to the team’s approach to support local people, residents and schools. It also showcases the results that can be achieved through true partnership working.”

Tim Macdermott, Director of Operations for Merthyr Tydfil Housing Association, said: “We were delighted to work in partnership with ENGIE on the development of Railway Close.”

ENGIE is currently working on a number of regeneration projects across South Wales and has invested over 500 man hours this year alone into community initiatives.
