Careers at SKY Academy

Martha Jennings talks about the highlights of her role so far.  Find out how you can start your career at Sky Academy. 

I’ve been managing Sky Academy Starting Out for six months now - and what a busy six months it’s been. We have hired over 135 young people to start their careers at Sky across our placement, apprenticeship and graduate programmes. We’ve also hosted hundreds of young people on work experience placements across the business, including launching new opportunities in our Customer Service Teams in Scotland.

In addition we also participated in a few new activities for Sky Academy Starting Out.

Firstly, during National Apprenticeship Week we attended The Big Bang Fair. One of the main reasons Sky is such a successful brand is because of the technology that makes it all happen and we know there is a shortage of young people continuing education in science and maths. So, we took volunteers from across all areas of Technology and Sky Academy to the Birmingham NEC for The Big Bang Fair, the largest science and engineering fair in the UK, to help inspire the next generation. Over the course of four days, the fair engages and inspires over 75,000 young people about the possibilities of working in technology. Our team of volunteers ran a series of interactive activities that showcased how we use technology at Sky.

We also piloted our ‘Work Experience Development Days’, which provide a day of careers coaching to young people looking to take the next step in their careers, Around 95 people, all of whom had previously sampled work experience at Sky, were given advice on how to prepare and apply for their next role.  We hope that some of them will go on to consider careers at Sky.

And finally, earlier this month we hosted the CBI Europe ‘Cost Effectiveness of Apprenticeships’ conference, where we spoke to a number of organisations across Europe keen to grow their apprenticeship offering. We hope that visiting Sky and hearing directly from some of our apprentices has given them some helpful ideas and insights from our own experience.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be finalising all our offers for this year’s Graduate, Apprenticeship and Work Placement opportunities before welcoming them to Sky this summer.
