On Thursday 3 March (World Book Day), Cambridge Assessment is launching a new ‘Book Exchange’ for employees to share books they’ve loved with each other and to start a conversation about literacy amongst colleagues.
The idea for the book exchange came about after exam board OCR became one of the founder signatories to the National Literacy Trust ‘Vision for Literacy’ Business Pledge 2016, which aims to address literacy within the workforce, the local community and at national level. OCR is already supporting the Pledge both through its Business in the Community partnerships with local schools (in which staff have been volunteering with careers support for students) and by developing online skills guidance resources for progression on to GCSE English.
The idea behind the new Book Exchange builds on Cambridge Assessment’s existing book club to create an area in the main Cambridge Assessment Café for colleagues to leave a book donation for others to enjoy.
Those taking part are encouraged to fill in a Book Exchange book mark explaining why they enjoyed the book and who they would recommend it for. There will be a specially designated area for children’s books so that staff can leave books that will encourage young people to get into reading, as family literacy is an important part of the pledge. As well as opening up a new world of literature, the area will also provide a quiet space for colleagues to take a break and recharge during the working day.
