Here at VERCIDA we kicked off our week by attending the Black History Celebration Day Event at London South Bank University (LSBU). The University hosted some moving performances from spoken-word poets such as Ryan Junior Matthew-Robinson, better known as Ragz-CV. Ragz-CV is founder of the charity Poetic Unity. The award winning lyricist perfomed along side artists Magero and Benna. Other poets on the day were Dorethea Smartt and Lanre Sulola (motivational speaker).
The afternoon gave way to passionate speeches, that tackled the issues around equality, diversity and being visible in the work-place and in our schools. The 3 panellists on the day were Stephen Bourne (Writer and Social Historian), Dr. Peace Ojimba-Baldwin (Educational Consultant) And Miranda Brawn (Diversity Leader).
With only 6% of professional engineers in the UK being of Black and Ethnic Minority (BAME), Professor Shushma Patel and Dr. Safia Barikzai filled us in on their work to encourage BAME woman into Engineering at LSBU and global initiative such as ROBOGALS. ROBOGALS is a non, profit international, student run organisation aiming to tackle gender imbalance in STEM.
To round up the day music was provided by Dynamic Bass and Voice Duo, Eileen Quashie and Alex Kundig.
Thank you to LSBU for such an amazing event.
