Entering the world of work is a trial, a journey, and an opportunity for personal growth. Early career professionals, whether graduates, apprentices of other trainees face new challenges settling into jobs and careers. We’ve got some top tips for pushing your way into the job that you want.
This is the oldest suggestion in the book. Put yourself in places where you may meet people in the industry you’re interested in. Think about employer open days or attend local networking events. It can be helpful to make a list of people you know from the gym, social media, or your neighbourhood. Also think about people you’ve met through your close connections: your sister’s co-worker, your best friend’s boss – any of them could be the link you need to get an important introduction.
Getting a great job is a balance. On one side, you need to chase great opportunities. On the other, you need to do something you’re genuinely passionate about. The skill is working out where the two can intersect – and it might not be where you think! Sketch out the things you love to do – and the skills they need. Chess fan? You enjoy strategy. Football player? You probably enjoy working as part of a team. Then get some help – are there things that connect these dots that you’re not considering? VERCIDA’s inbuilt artificial intelligence system could suggest jobs based on your CV that you may not be looking at.
Employers and potential employers can and will check you out online. Start a LinkedIn profile, keep it up to date and don’t be afraid to reach out to people in your industry of interest. Connect, comment and ask questions – people will probably be flattered by your interest. The same goes for Twitter. Find people you think have great jobs and follow them – where do they go, what do they do, how can you get involved? Remember though, keep your social media interactions professional.
This is a tough one and I’m a little reluctant to even include it. Opportunities for (often) unpaid volunteering are numerous but unattainable for some. After all, it requires you to be able to support yourself while gaining experience. That said, it does help you gain transferrable skills. If you can, you should.
It’s not easy to carve out the career of your dreams. But we can help make it easier. We offer a database of thousands of jobs with socially-conscious employers. And detailed profiles that can help you understand what companies believe, and how they show it.
