We’re celebrating National Inclusion Week

Inclusion is at the heart of our culture and we’re determined to create a workplace where every colleague can be themselves.

As part of this, from today Aviva colleagues can request a sticker to add to their ID badges that displays their pronouns. We believe having pronouns on display can help normalise conversations about gender identity and will give allies and advocates the opportunity to show their support to the LGBTQ+ community.

Here, Jo explains why using pronouns is important to them.

“My name is Jo and my pronouns are they/them/their and xe/xem/xer.

“I’m currently involved in rolling out pronouns stickers for our work ID badges. This is important because if people share their pronouns, it takes the pressure off trans and nonbinary people to be the ‘odd one out’ and also helps reduce misgendering.

“I had come out at work as nonbinary in 2019, and while my team and managers at the time were very kind about it, the pronouns didn’t seem to stick. I was constantly misgendered for almost two years.

"Eventually, by using various resources and by openly talking to my team how the misgendering was affecting me, they got the hang of it. It still happens sometimes, especially when I meet new people at work, but it has definitely improved for me.

“These stickers are another way of helping people feel included and it’s a practical step to get everyone to do something visible.”
