This week is Anti Bullying Week, the theme of which is Reach Out.

Bullying affects millions of lives and can leave us feeling hopeless. But it doesn’t have to be this way. If we challenge it, we can change it. And it starts by reaching out.

DIO staff complete annual, mandatory training courses to empower them to become ‘Active Bystanders’ and to speak out against unacceptable behaviour. Individuals are encouraged to reflect on their own behaviour, set positive examples, and create a kinder place to work.

This week has seen a series of initiatives aimed at reminding people of their role in challenging unacceptable behaviour and where to go to get support, if needed, to create change.

DIO’s social wellbeing champion, also a SpeakSafe Volunteer within the organisation, Heidi Waggett, explained: “SpeakSafe volunteers are a network of volunteers who work across DIO. They are available as a safe pair of hands to go to and talk to and are for anyone needing help. Anyone can access a SpeakSafe volunteer if they experience, witness or are accused of any unacceptable behaviour. Line managers can contact them if they need advice around an issue, so there is somewhere to go to get some clarity around options or on where to go next.

“Our yearly active bystander training is mandatory. It’s vital we keep fresh in our minds what it means to be an active bystander, and that we embed a culture of zero tolerance towards unacceptable behaviours. We all play a role in challenging unacceptable behaviours. To be able to utilise the tools delivered as part of the training is really important, and that’s what we are reminding people of this week.”
