Katie's story: Access to training opportunities and hybrid working at the MOD

Hi, I’m Katie and I joined the Civil Service 21 years ago. In that time, I have enjoyed a variety of roles in different sectors of the MOD.  The Civil Service really motivates me to succeed in all that I do. I have been privileged to have had the opportunity to fill roles from recruitment to retention, from learning and development to safeguarding and from infrastructure to health.  Recently I have just started a role in Diversity and Inclusion and part of my role is to ensure all our policies are inclusive and do not disadvantage anyone in out workforce. 

Over the years I have had plenty of access to training opportunities where I have gained skills for each of my roles which I could then transfer onto my next role. Throughout my time in the Civil Service, I have worked in small teams, in big teams and I have also led teams of 25 individuals and the civil service gives me the training so that I can look after the wellbeing of all my staff.

The Civil Service is a great place to work as it has given me opportunities to travel not only in this country but abroad also.  It’s a great place to learn as they offer apprenticeships in many subjects at different levels, and you are given the time to do it in your working week, so you don’t have to learn in your own time. 

Over the years there has been a lot of changes and one of the latest is hybrid working which a mix of working in the office and working from home which has provided great flexibility and aided the work/life balance. I would recommend working for the MOD as I have really enjoyed my 21 years and have worked with some really great and friendly people.
