The success of any organisation is built upon its people. Evidence shows that organisations who focus on their people and on fostering a positive working environment can increase productivity by 50% and improve people’s energy at work by up to 106%. Looking after the Health and Wellbeing of our people is a core component of creating a positive environment and doing so will build up trust in the organisation and leaders as well as making our people feel safe at work.
Organisations that focus on the Health and Wellbeing (HWB) of their people will be more resilient to change, and more productive through a healthier, engaged and motivated workforce. Currently, only 33% of UK workers agree that senior leaders encourage a focus on wellbeing through their actions (where many just “talk” about it), this isn’t good enough for our organisations and certainly isn’t good enough for our people.
My company, Capita are challenging the traditional siloed approach to HWB which has primarily focused on the individual. These traditional measures tend to promote a much more reactive response to HWB challenges (for example addressing the impact of sickness absence) rather than pro-active, preventative measures. As Desmond Tutu once said:
“There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they are falling in.”
What’s needed is a comprehensive approach that provides unique insight into the holistic environment that people experience both inside and outside of work and how the actions of organisations have a direct impact on how employees feel. For example, rather than look at an individual’s health and wellbeing, focus instead on the structures that exist in your organisation and the environment you are creating through a number of factors such as leadership, strategic decision making, and organisational policies.
This holistic approach helps organisations to build long term stability through creating a positive environment for their people, enabling them to be more resilient and responsive to an ever-changing world. Highly engaged teams show 21% greater profitability. These teams also show a 41% reduction in absenteeism and 59% less employee turnover.
The real value of this holistic approach is evident when it comes to decision making. Organisations are able to consider strategic decisions through a new lens of Health and Wellbeing, enabling them to fully understand the impact that they will have on their people, and ultimately their health, wellbeing, engagement, and enjoyment at work. This approach also helps to address the balance between short-term and long-term goals at a strategic level.
Many of us will have worked in organisations where decisions have been made that influence only the short-term financial benefits but at the cost of longer-term outcomes whilst at the same time damaging the relationship with its people and eroding trust. This needs to change.
