The Ship Standards and Technical Performance Support Team (TST) is located at MCA HQ in Southampton. The TST is part of the wider Maritime Safety & Standards Directorate (DMSS).

The TST is responsible for providing support to branches and posts in DMSS which are concerned with the safety of ships in terms of their navigation or operation, construction and equipment or environmental pollution.

The Apprenticeship role will involve working within a diverse team of Business Support Officers, to provide effective business support in accordance with an internal service level agreement.

Some of the daily tasks that the Business Support Officer role includes are;

• Post opening/allocating duties,
• Answering telephone enquiries,
• Ordering stationary/equipment,
• Coordinating interview ‘meet and greets’,
• Processing applications,
• Database input & reports,
• Secretariat duties and support for internal & external meetings including minute taking / report writing,
• Customer service responsibilities, dealing with enquiries from internal/external customers,
• Ship survey arrangements,
• Ship inspection/port state control administrative functions,
• Production of statutory certificates and exemptions,
• Website and intranet maintenance tasks,
• Supporting the production of regulatory guidance documents.

As the role develops there will be opportunities for the apprentice to become more involved in other aspects of the teams work.
