6 things every neurodiverse job seeker should look for in a potential employer?

Category: Neurodiversity

Diversity and Inclusion

Finding an employer who understands and values neurodiverse employees can be a challenge. Here are 6 steps you can take in your job search to identify potential employers who are committed to diversity and inclusion:

  1. Research the Company's Diversity Policies: Before applying to a job, take the time to research the company's diversity policies. Do they have a commitment to diversity and inclusion? Do they have any specific policies in place to support neurodiverse employees? If not, it may be worth considering whether this is the right company for you.
  2. Look for Flexible Working Arrangements: Many neurodiverse individuals find that they work best when they have flexibility in their working arrangements. Look for companies that offer flexible hours, remote working options, or part-time roles. This can help you to better manage your condition while still being a productive and engaged employee.
  3. Consider the Company's Culture: The culture of a company can have a significant impact on your success as a neurodiverse employee. Look for companies that have a culture of acceptance and inclusion. This may be reflected in the company's values, or in the way that employees talk about the company online. Try to get a sense of the company's culture before applying for a job.
  4. Assess the Company's Support Systems: Many neurodiverse individuals benefit from additional support in the workplace. Look for companies that have support systems in place for neurodiverse employees. This may include things like mentorship programs, employee resource groups, or access to occupational therapy services.
  5. Ask About Accommodations: During the interview process, don't be afraid to ask about accommodations that can be made to support your neurodiversity. This may include things like modified workspaces, noise-cancelling headphones, or access to assistive technology. A company that is committed to diversity and inclusion should be open to discussing accommodations with you.
