Yes, you can move into the nuclear industry without starting your career there. Fadl Isa spent around 14 years in aerospace, defence and academia before joining nuclear, and found that his engineering skills were “incredibly valuable and completely transferable”. His story shows that nuclear needs people from a wide range of backgrounds, including career changers.

You don’t have to start your career in nuclear to build a future in it.
Before joining the nuclear industry, Fadl Isa spent around 14 years working across aerospace, defence and academia. His experience ranged from jet engines and landing gear to robotics and communication systems.
Like many people considering a move into nuclear, Fadl initially wondered whether the industry would be difficult to break into. He soon discovered just how valuable his existing skills were.
“Whether you’re building an aircraft or a small modular reactor, those skills are incredibly valuable and completely transferable,” he says.
Fadl now works at Amentum UK and International. Joining the Nuclear Institute has also helped him see the bigger picture, connecting different disciplines and giving him the chance to learn from people across the industry.
His view of the sector is clear: “Right now, I don’t think there’s a more important industry to be in.”
What this means for jobseekers
Fadl’s story is a reminder that nuclear needs people with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, including those considering a career change. If you work in aerospace, defence or another engineering-led sector, your skills may travel further than you think.
