UK Athletics: 60 Seconds With… Janet Onyia
Black History Month – 1-31 October 2019

Janet Onyia
What is your role with British Athletics?
I volunteer with the Major Events Team in Athlete Logistics.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
For me, Black History Month is a great opportunity to cast a spotlight on the achievements and contribution of black people, black culture and our identity.
What black individual do you most admire in history?
There have been a lot of different people over the years but at the moment it's Althea Gibson. She was the first black person to win the grand slam in Tennis. Up until a few years before that, black people were not even permitted to enter tournaments like the US Open. She was also a pro golfer, singer and Hollywood actress.
What is a fact about you most people would not know?
I first volunteered for British Athletics in 2012 for the UK School Games and loved it and have been ever present since. Also, I worked on the medal ceremonies for London 2017 events and Glasgow 2019.
