We exist to make walking, wheeling and cycling a genuine choice for everyone. We approve and inspect schemes, and we are a statutory consultee on whether major developments properly cater for pedestrians, cyclists, and people who use wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
We cannot do that well without people who have navigated those barriers themselves. If you have first-hand experience of what makes a route usable or unusable, that is relevant expertise, not a disclosure.
You will get an interview if you meet the minimum criteria
As an executive agency of the Department for Transport, we work to DfT's Disability Confident Leader standard. If you tell us you are disabled and your application meets the minimum criteria for the role, we will interview you.
Asking for an adjustment
Tell us as early as you can and before the vacancy closes. You do not need a diagnosis or evidence, and what you tell us plays no part in the selection decision.
Common requests include step-free access, extra time, questions in advance, breaks, a different interview format, or a remote alternative to an in-person stage. If what you need is not listed, ask anyway.
Once you join
If you need training or equipment to do your job, we have a process to get it.
You can join DfT's disability staff network, Ability, including its subgroups for neurodiversity, mental health, and d/Deafness and hearing loss. DfT has a board-level disability champion.
