An apprenticeship at Amentum UK combines paid, real-world project work in the defence business with time to complete formal studies. Apprentices are given a buddy on day one, a line manager who aligns day-to-day work with the course, and a mentor to help turn workplace experience into coursework. Sophie Townsend joined as an apprentice in 2023 and is now a Project Manager working in defence.

Starting a career is a big step, and not everyone has it all figured out on day one. For Sophie Townsend, an apprenticeship at Amentum offered the best of both worlds: real industry experience alongside the chance to complete her studies. Three years on, she is a Project Manager in Amentum's Defence and Security business. For National Apprenticeship Week 2026, Sophie shared her story, and here she explains in her own words what the journey has been like.

Why an Apprenticeship?

"Hi everyone, I'm Sophie. I'm a Project Manager here at Amentum and I joined back in 2023 as an apprentice. Since then I've been working within the defence side of the business.

"I was drawn to apply for an apprenticeship because it enabled me to gain real-life industry experience as well as providing me with the opportunity to complete my studies alongside this. In turn, it's developed my personal growth and understanding, but also my professional."

Supported from the Very First Day

"Since the very start of my apprenticeship, I have felt incredibly supported by Amentum. On the very first day when I walked into the office, I was provided with a buddy. They helped me walk through the systems that we use and talked me through the onboarding process, so I didn't have to go through it alone.

"Since then, my line manager helped talk to my college to make sure that the work I was completing in my day-to-day role aligned with the course I was completing. In addition to this, I was provided with a mentor, someone to help bridge the gap between the work I was completing and how to get it down on paper to submit to my college."

Growing in Confidence

"When I first started my career I didn't have everything figured out, and that's OK. Since then, and through the help of my apprenticeship, I've been able to take on more responsibility and gain confidence working in this industry."

Inspiring the Next Generation

"One of the key things I've got from my role here at Amentum is being able to help inspire the next generation of future professionals. This is achieved through our STEAM initiative, which enables us to go to different careers fairs and talks across the South West, inspiring students that there's always a place for them in this industry."

Sophie's Advice to Students

"One piece of advice I would give to students is to never underestimate yourselves. It's challenging when it comes to applying, but it always pays off in the end. Ask hard questions and be open to new learning opportunities. We look forward to working with you here at Amentum."
