The Product

The product is a suite of new tools and software used by our content producers to enable them to create digital content - shortform video, clips, animations, and much more - for our audiences.  Software tools that are built to edit, collaborate, review, approve, publish and store digital content.

Role Responsibility
Who will I be working with?

The software engineer roles are part of a small team building the next generation of production tools. These tools will allow the BBC to create more ‘digital first', shortform content for our websites, apps and other platforms. 

As a software engineer in a small team apart from developing software you will have lots of opportunities to contribute in defining team culture, software development processes etc. On a day to day basis you will be interacting with Developers, Product Manager, Business Analyst, UX/UI Designer etc.

We have a great mix of people including frontend specialists, backend specialists and full stack developers. We are very flexible and happy to support you in moving between teams and projects that fulfil your interests.

What will I be doing?

As a member of our team we will work collaboratively:
  • Building excellently engineered, high availability solutions capable of handling huge volumes of traffic.
  • Delivering features using agile development practices and by writing beautiful, maintainable code.
  • Collaborating effectively with other teams to deliver the best value audience experience.
  • Seeking out opportunities to employ new technologies and methods to enhance our products and services.
  • Reviewing the work of your colleagues and helping others.
  • Solving operational issues, including working under a Dev Ops model.
  • Assisting with recruiting, mentoring and training new team members.


Are you the right candidate?
You will have experience of some of the following:
  • Using web technologies, HTML/CSS, and including JavaScript and libraries such as Angular and React.
  • Working with Node.JS or similar server-side development languages.
  • Building and maintaining RESTful APIs as node.js applications using Promises.
  • Integrating RESTful APIs and other 3 rd party components.
  • Creating and supporting reliable and scalable cloud based micro services on Amazon Web Services.
  • Working with Relational and NoSQL databases such as schema design and scaling.
  • Browser side debugging using appropriate tools such as Chrome DevTools, breakpoints, memory profiling and CPU profiling.
  • Testing tools and approaches, including Test Driven Development and test frameworks such as Mocha and Jasmine.
  • Using source control systems such as Subversion and Git.
  • Using jenkins and other tools to deploy applications to different environments.
  • Adopting a "can do" positive attitude, a willingness to learn and collaborate with colleagues.
  • Communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Agile software development methodologies.
