Job Description:
Hiscox Central Underwriting teams are located throughout the UK mainly in our regional central underwriting hubs including Colchester and York. The team forms part of Hiscox UK's central operations function and are responsible for the technical underwriting of new business and referrals, influencing the declinature rate targets for the portfolio using the change cycle.

Central Underwriters work with the regional teams to deliver superb service in line with the agreed sales strategy.

You'll focus on underwriting existing business for our commercial policies, playing a senior role within the team from a technical perspective and mentoring more junior colleagues. The role will offer a great platform to allow you to progress your career within Hiscox.

What you'll be doing:

  • You'll be underwriting our commercial products in line with our high standards
  • Working towards set targets each month including profitability, conversion and productivity
  • Dealing with larger and more complex technical referrals and risks
  • Providing mentoring and coaching to less experienced underwriters
  • Monitoring the overall performance of the book and ensuring remedial action is taken to correct any performance issues
  • Writing a minimum amount of GWP of business each year, as agreed with the line manager
  • Challenging non-standard underwriting decisions leveraging the expertise of product specialists and underwriting managers
  • Showing courage and innovation by spotting process improvements and how we can do things differently to improve the customer experience and drive profitable growth

Our must haves

  • The ability to demonstrate effective negotiation with all levels and types of broker, and experience of having dealt with non-standard risks effectively
  • Able to make appropriate decisions when dealing with complex technical issues and can justify underwriting decisions
  • Regularly challenges convention, writing 'non standard' business on a regular basis and able to take decisive action on loss making business
  • Demonstrable drive and energy to move self and business forward
  • ACII qualification or close to completion
  • Strong market and competitor knowledge
  • Consistently demonstrates behaviours conducive to achieving both personal and team objectives, in line with the core values of Hiscox
