Staff Network Groups at BBC

The BBC has five staff network groups; set-up to provide support for our people.

STEM Women

WiSTEM is one combined PAN BBC Group, to inform, support, and educate Women in and into STEM careers. We run both internal and external events for colleagues and partners alike, spend time in schools educating people about STEM careers and provide support for our women across the organization. From launch 18 months ago we have grown from a small group of 6 to over 70 members, with 10 partnerships and a number of internal and external events under our belt – with a view to accelerating this further in 2017.

Global Women in News (GWiN)

Global Women in News (GWiN) is a networking and development group for women in the BBC working in news, wherever they are based.  Our aim is to build the confidence, networking and leadership skills of women in news. We want women at the BBC to feel that they can reach their full potential so that their voices both on and off air can be more influential. We will do this through a mentoring scheme, guest speakers, and a suite of tailored training events for the GWiN network.

The Black and Asian Forum

The Black and Asian Forum is a staff led group providing peer support, networking opportunities and a focus for discussion of BAME related issues.  Our main objectives are:

  • To encourage and support BAME staff to develop and achieve their full potential
  • To bring BAME employees together by offering networking opportunities with both internal and external industry professionals
  • To make a positive contribution to BBC policy development and implementation.
  • To support the BBC in creating greater diversity both for workforce and portrayal.

BBC Pride

BBC Pride brings together people of all sexualities working at, or in partnership with, the BBC. We provide support, advice and friendship to members and open up channels of communication both at work and socially.

BBC Ability

Our role is to support disabled staff at the BBC and to act as a source of advice for anyone wanting to know more about disability.  Our work currently covers:

  • Technology – making sure that the working environment is as barrier-free as possible
  • Property – lobbying for an ever more accessible workplace
  • Access Unit – working with the BBC and Remploy to ensure that disabled staff get the support that they need
  • Policy – regularly meeting top BBC managers to ensure that disability is on the agenda
  • Events – whether it’s an evening with a purpose or just getting together to shoot the breeze over a few drinks
  • Career development – encouraging the BBC not only to recruit but to provide adequate job progression for disabled people
