Staff Development at York St John University

Here at York St John, there’s no doubt people are our most important asset. Our dedicated Staff Development team focuses on giving everyone a structure to keep them learning and growing. After all, everyday development is essential in an environment that’s all about bringing out the very best in our students.

Join us at York St John and your development here will start on day one. Everyone begins with a full induction to the University, so you can see exactly how we do things and where your role fits in. Once you’re up and running in the job, we’ll continue to give you plenty of support. Plus, our structured Performance Development Reviews will give you the chance to talk through what you need and agree on a development plan for each and every year.

To keep your skills, knowledge and career on the move, you can choose from a wide range of learning and development options. From training workshops and bespoke development events, to volunteering, coaching and mentoring – there’s something for everyone, no matter what your role, expertise or experience. There’s also funding available for you to study for new qualifications, so you can learn new skills that will benefit the University and your future ambitions.

We are committed to creating an equitable, developmental and motivating work environment for staff. Staff Development is a key route to achieving this.

Through the Personal Development Review process and our dedicated Staff Development Department, we aim to provide opportunities for all staff to access training and further qualifications. The Fee Remission scheme makes it possible for staff to study qualifications, either in house or with an external provider, with opportunities ranging from a number of language courses to an MA or PhD. The University will also waive 20% of the tuition fees for spouses/ civil partners and children of staff employed at York St John who wish to enrol on any of the University’s postgraduate programmes.

The Staff Development Team within Student and Staff Services provide advice and guidance on the best possible development solution appropriate to your individual needs. They work in partnership with the Directorate of Academic Development who support academic staff to develop their potential and career within Higher Education. The Technology Enhanced and ICT Teams are also available to offer development opportunities for staff to develop their technical skills.

Research Skills Development Programme for Academic Staff and Research Students

The programme is designed to offer support and advice to meet the needs of any researcher; from those who have not yet started to those who are more experienced or feel they need to update their skills. We will cover every stage of research - from keeping up to date with the developments in academic fields to applying for external funding and leading collaborative projects. The sessions aim to encourage and support people to become more effective researchers. Take as many sessions as you feel you need - the programme is designed to help you develop general research skills and update those you already have. The programme is not designed to help academics update their professional training, which is another very important area of scholarly activity.

Development Events & Networks

We are delighted to announce that the University is now working collaboratively with Durham University and Newcastle University to deliver a series of 'Spotlight' events on leadership.

This partnership will not only allow YSJ managers to attend leadership events with key experts in the field, it will also provide the opportunity to network with colleagues from Durham and Newcastle with the possibility of individuals setting up their own opportunities for development moving forward.
