Home & Flexible Working at Ministry of Defence – Royal Navy

MOD prides itself on being a modern employer and encourages a range of flexibilities to enable a better work-life balance for civilian employees. The department recognises that by enabling employees to create a good work-life balance, it benefits by attracting and retaining high calibre staff. Flexible working arrangements can operate successfully at all Levels and must not be a barrier to career progression and development of employees.

Reshaping your job Employees may request to work flexibly by reshaping their job and should discuss the possibility for this with their line manager. There are two main ways employees can reshape their job which are detailed below. Partial Retirement DE&S aims to support employees in a gradual move towards retirement; there are a number of options for doing this, including various working patterns. One of the options is partial retirement - It offers the chance to continue working on a basis more suited to the employee’s retirement aspirations. Job sharing Job Sharing enables two individuals to share the duties of one full-time post, widening the pool of jobs available to part –time staff. Employees interested in job sharing should note standard recruitment rules will apply. The Civil Service Job Finder website allows civil servants to look for a job share partner

Flexible Working

MOD supports a wide range of working arrangements including (but not limited):

  • reduced hours - working a reduced number of hours per day;
  • reduced days - working a reduced number of days per week;
  • term time - employee has all school holidays off and only works during term time;

Flexi-time - employees work their contracted hours flexibly, within an agreed bandwidth.

PLEASE NOTE: In all cases employees will require line manager agreement to work flexibly. Managers are encouraged to support flexible working where it can be accommodated by the business, but employees should be mindful that some options may not be practical for some jobs and they should work with line managers to agree a pattern that works for the business as well as themselves.
