Corporate Responsibility at Legal & General

We believe that our success is entirely consistent with our broader social purpose. We strive to be a company that performs well for our stakeholders: customers, employees, suppliers and investors.

Experience tells us that companies that are socially and economically useful tend to outperform financially over the long term. Social usefulness confers a “license to operate” but scale and economic strength, properly aligned to social purpose, enable a well-intentioned company to make a real difference: to the economy, the environment and to the living standards of our customers.

Our work in the community is to support four distinct areas of focus: our employees, volunteering, education and social enterprises. Each of these areas provides us with the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives.

We don’t have a charity of the year. Our employees choose the charities we support in each location mainly their own local charities including local hospices. There are a number of national charities we support from Comic/Sport Relief, Macmillan, Prostate and Breast Cancer charities and Children in Need. Employees in our Hove, Cardiff and Birmingham locations have also volunteered their time for specially set up call center donations appeals.

Our Employees Supporting Their Communities

We encourage our employees to support charities personal to them through our sponsorship and time matching schemes and give as you earn schemes.

Time matching gives our employees the opportunity to turn their volunteering time in the community into money for their charity or community groups. We believe this gives more of our employees the chance to support their local charities, sports clubs and community group who may not have the opportunity to fundraise. Without this group of volunteers we would see less community action.

Our sponsorship matching and give as you earn schemes continue to engage over 35% of our employees. For more details see our Community data in the CSR Report.

Our Chairman's Community Awards

John Stewart, Chairman, hosts the ‘Community Awards’ each year, recognising the amazing achievements of our employees. There are a number of charity categories including fundraisers, charity ambassadors, inspiring the young people and community spirit.
