East London women are starting the new year with an event promoting good mental health for all women. 21 January 2020, Soroptimist East London hosts Joyce Kallevik, director of WISH to talk about women’s mental health in the community and in the criminal justice system.

Joyce, is a widely recognised authority on the reality of women’s mental health provision. She’ll be sharing her extensive experience working as a mental health advocate and the unique insights she’s gained through her own experience of mental illness. WISH, based in East London, is the UK’s only mental health charity, just for women, that works across prisons, hospitals and in the community. It supports over 1000 women a year, campaigns to give them a voice at a local and national level and for better care and treatment for women in mental health and criminal justice. Many women in trouble with the criminal justice system have mental health problems and may themselves have been victims of crime, WISH argues that the current system “is inadequate at best, and abusive at worst” and that there “is both a financial and human cost to the current situation”.

Donations will be requested at the event and will go towards Soroptimist East London’s work to empower women and girls.
