Taking inspiration from Citizen’s Assemblies, UKAEA Young Worker’s Assemblies are run in collaboration with Prospect Trade Union and UKAEA. The assembly is an opportunity for young workers to discuss issues that affect their career, and to provide a space to develop ideas and solutions to them. These solutions are then consolidated into motions which can be presented to UKAEA management. All of this is an effort to unify the voices of young workers within the organisation and to ensure that they are heard, and to achieve positive change.
Young Workers’ Assemblies are run as hybrid meetings over lunchtime, with in-person and hybrid breakout rooms where small groups can discuss improvements that they’d like to see at UKAEA. Most recently, the topic discussed at the event was Networking, and lots of great ideas were shared about events and initiatives that young people would like to see, such as departmental open days, learning lunches and collaboration with external organisations.
These assemblies offer an open and equal forum for young UKAEA employees to share ideas and we’ve found that they’ve resulted in bringing together people who would not normally work together, both between departments and between Early Careers schemes.
