Women in Transport: TfL head of campaigns and stakeholder

100 Years of Women in Transport.

Jo's role involves championing stakeholders' needs and acting as their advocate within TfL, as well as securing their support, partnerships and advocacy to help drive and protect TfL's reputation.

How did you get into transport?

After graduating from my Masters, I worked for a national family support charity in Scotland before moving to London to head up the British Youth Council’s policy and public affairs team.

Moving from the charity sector into transport wasn’t an obvious choice but I’m glad I made the move. I came to TfL 7 years ago to build our stakeholder engagement team and transform our external relationships.

What does your job involve?

I look after TfL’s relationships with a wide range of stakeholders that speak for our customers and users including business, industry bodies, passenger representatives, statutory watchdogs, consumer groups, disabled people’s organisations, charities and transport campaign groups. I also support our operating business by leading the communications and engagement strategies for all our major planning projects and our Commercial Development team. My role is to champion our stakeholders’ needs and act as their advocate within TfL as well as to secure their support, partnerships and advocacy to help drive and protect our reputation.

What do you like about working in transport?

Transport has a huge impact on many people’s lives and my role brings new and exciting
challenges every day.

What are you most proud of?

Transforming our stakeholder relationships with a whole range of groups from businesses to charities and bringing us to a position where our stakeholders are willing to be advocates and campaign on our behalf.

What would your advice be to someone interested in your role?

If you want to work in public affairs and stakeholder engagement in the transport sector, the best thing to do is to get experience working for a charity or an MP or join our public affairs graduate scheme.

How can we encourage more young people to join the transport industry?

It’s important to raise awareness of the variety of roles you can do in the industry. We should also be asking young people what would encourage them to join the industry.
