The fourth story in the series of our celebrating our Women in Tech interviews. This time, we speak to Chantelle Prempeh, Lead User Experience Manager.

Chantelle

How did you decide to pursue a career in technology? Was it your childhood ambition or a spontaneous decision to work in the field?

I had always been interested in hands-on classes at school, my favourite classes were Technology and Art, coupled with playing video games from a young age I think I always would have been doing something tech-based or art, and I kind of do both now (and a lot more!).

I’d always been interested in UX, I remember being taught about Ergonomics in Resistant Materials, so always had an interest in why things are built the way they are, and who for.

What are your biggest achievements / moments you’re most proud of in the workplace?

The updates we are making to the Nuffield Health app has been a highlight, making it more beneficiary-centric and user friendly, it’s been nice to hear the improvements and there’s a lot more to come.

What advice can you give to women considering a career in tech?

Network and research! Tech is rewarding but isn’t an easy field, so make sure you understand what roles interest you, start asking around, join meetups and get some real-life knowledge before making the deep dive. I would also avoid bootcamps or anything that promises to get you a job in X number of months! (It probably won’t and might cost you a penny!)

Do you think that women have the same opportunities as men in the tech world? How can we change that?

I think it depends on the field, UX has more women than men but maybe something like Data Engineering may have a different ratio. Again, I think if people want to pursue opportunities they shouldn’t limit themselves, if you can’t see an opportunity then seek one, and ask around.

About Nuffield Health:

Driven by our purpose to build a healthier nation, our experts have been working together for more than 60 years to make the nation fitter, healthier, happier and stronger.

We achieve this through being the UK's largest Healthcare Charity with our industry-leading network of 31 hospitals, 112 fitness and wellbeing centres, medical centres and workplace wellbeing facilities. We believe that the best healthcare should help prevent illness by looking after the mind and body. Our holistic wellbeing offering spans physical and mental health — from personal training, health assessments, GP services, and physiotherapy to providing mental health support or hospital treatments for serious conditions. We also use our expertise to support the NHS and help people to prevent illness and injury, working in collaboration with all parts of the health service.

What makes us truly different is our commitment to our unique flagship programmes, where we respond to developing national unmet health and wellbeing needs in local communities and widen access to our services, experts and resources to give more people the tools to live a healthy life. Our flagships help young people understand and improve their own health, help people living with joint pain, and, most recently, help rehabilitate people experiencing the long-term effects from COVID-19. Through all our education, research and flagships we are building the evidence base for a holistic approach to healthcare that helps prevent physical and mental illness in the future.

As a trading charity, we do not fundraise and we invest all our income back into our purpose to build a healthier nation. With our purpose at the heart of everything we do, we always focus on the wider impact of our actions on our people, on those who benefit from our flagship programmes, on local communities and on the environment.
