As the operators of the largest county in the UK, Essex County Council places a premium on hiring the best possible candidates to work for them. In order to achieve this, they have developed a number of benefits and support systems to ensure they can motivate applicants with an enticing package.
1 – Career development
Essex County Council realises that employees need to feel that they have opportunities for advancement and development in their place of work. They provide training schemes for employees at all levels, from graduates to seniors, with an emphasis on constructive feedback.
2 – Carers network
In recognition of the important role carers play, the Carers Network was set up as a support mechanism for those employees of the Council who provide care, such as for a sick family member or disabled child. The network provides a forum where staff can discuss any issues they might be having, work related or otherwise.
3 – Ethnic minorities network
This group, dedicated to preventing workplace discrimination on the basis of race as well as promoting ethnic diversity, meets regularly and provides peer support, raises awareness on issues and gives advice to the Council and associated businesses.
4 – Disability support
Essex County Council is committed to assisting all its employees, regardless of capability. The Disabled Employee Network meets four to five times a year and provides advice to the Council on ways it can improve the working environment for different abled employees, whether this is by changing the physical workspace or installing specialist equipment.
5 – LGBTQ+ support
The LGBT Network Group provides support and advice for staff members who are also part of the LGBTQ+ community. They represent their issues to the Council as a whole, as well as provide a confidential forum for anyone who needs to air a grievance or requires welfare-related assistance.
6 – Graduate opportunities and apprenticeships
For those looking for valuable work experience while studying, a steppingstone for a graduate career, or even apprenticeship opportunities, Essex County Council provides a variety of different schemes, suitable for all backgrounds and stages of education.
7 – Volunteering
Essex County Council believes in promoting volunteerism in the workplace, and to facilitate this, they allocate 2 days a year for each employee to engage in whichever charitable or voluntary pursuit they choose, providing support and opportunities where necessary.
8 – Benefits and perks
Working for Essex County Council comes with a variety of miscellaneous bonuses, including discounts at local businesses, reduced rates for public transport, childcare vouchers and eyecare vouchers.
9 – Religious network
The Christian Fellowship meets twice a week for informal prayer and bible study meetings. The sessions are open to anyone regardless of whether they are a practising Christian, and the Council offers alternative spaces for those of different faiths to practise their beliefs.
10 – Employee assistance programme
As the conversation around mental health increases and employees look to government bodies and businesses to provide levels of support, Essex County Council is proud to offer its own in-house counselling and general wellbeing service.
