The rich heritage and culture that define UK Black History Month

Category: black history month

The words Black History on a red VERCIDA branded background

Bloomberg proudly celebrates Black History Month in the UK and recognises the culture and inspirational achievements of individuals of African and African Caribbean descent.

A diverse workforce and open culture are at the heart of our company and vital to our success. By giving a voice to people of all backgrounds, and their many allies throughout our organization, we ensure that our success is built on a solid foundation of community, creativity, and innovation. At Bloomberg, it’s our tradition.

Employees from our London office in the Black Professional Community at Bloomberg share what Black History Month means to them, how it honors the black community and its impact in the workplace.

Sisieta Owen

Sisieta manages a regulatory and compliance monitoring program across Bloomberg’s businesses in EMEA.

Of Nigerian heritage and born in London, Sisieta and her five siblings were raised with the best of British and Nigerian influences. The resiliency and tenacity embedded in Nigerian tradition, taught her to see challenges as developmental opportunities of learning from your mistakes and trying harder the next time. These Nigerian values combined with the British culture of honesty and meritocracy of reaping what you sow – has shaped her into the person she is today. The UK Black History Month honors the many historical generations before her parents that instilled these strong values.

“There is real power in difference…positively embedding ethnic differences in teams encourages different ideas, rationales and perspectives.” – Sisieta

Clare Burns

Clare works on the Engineering team and is a proud ally in the Black Professional Community at Bloomberg.

Diversity and inclusion is important to Clare as she has seen firsthand how it encourages innovation, improving teams and performance in the workplace. By being more inclusive of black employees and others from different ethnicities, it means that we build a more collaborative work environment which helps drive individuals’ growth, which directly benefits the business.

“By embracing our cultural and ethnic differences, we combine what we have in common with what we each individually bring to our company.” – Clare

Daniel Johnson

Daniel is the Team Leader for EMEA Derivatives and Foreign Exchange in Global Data.

Daniel explains, “Every human being on this planet is equal; however, society has caused us to believe otherwise.” He advocates for stronger representation of black employees across companies because of the wealth of knowledge, experiences and our sheer desire to accomplish more and succeed – will help advance workplaces.

“The accomplishments of black people throughout history, both male and female, should be celebrated at all times.” – Daniel

Emily Nathan

Emily has a dual role at Bloomberg; she is the Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Recruiter and D&I Program Manager for EMEA.

As a member of the D&I team, Emily works closely with the Black Professional Community at Bloomberg to help recruit, retain and develop black talent. She works alongside talented individuals every day, and by being inclusive of people of black heritage and people from all backgrounds, we increase our capacity to innovate and deliver the best products and services. She sees the importance of people coming to work as their authentic selves and feeling empowered to impact the business globally.

“Diversity doesn’t start and stop with gender – diversity in all its dimensions drives innovation.” – Emily

At Bloomberg, we strive to create an inclusive environment for our diverse workforce to utilize their unique backgrounds, perspectives, abilities and ethnicities to work and in our communities.  It’s our tradition.
