Teneo provided a 6-week internship opportunity in their Strategic Communications division for 3 interns between June – July 2022.
The programme is specifically designed to provide young black people with invaluable work experience and broaden their horizons and ambition by introducing new sectors and career opportunities they may not have previously considered or been aware of.
The six-week internship was comprised of three elements:
Learning and Development
This was offered via Talent Development sessions comprised of face-to-face training and e-learning sessions offered at Teneo, as well as bespoke sessions developed for the interns.
Client-facing tasks
The interns were given the opportunity to work on real client accounts with the support of their Talent Managers. They were provided with tasks similar to the tasks completed by Teneo’s entry level Trainee Executives which enabled them to develop real skills and experience required in the industry. The interns were invites to attend all relevant client meetings to bolster their understanding of client work as well as key other skills such as building relationships, managing expectations and delivering difficult messages.
An independent project
Alongside their client facing tasks and Talent Development sessions, the interns were set an independent presentation project to complete for their last week of their internship. This was to allow them to incorporate the skills / tools and knowledge learnt over the course of the six-week internship. This was not graded but was a great opportunity for them to express their creativity and work on their presentation delivery skills to a wider audience of our colleagues.

“I applied to the internship to gain some experience in a new industry, very different to what I am studying at university, and I thought my last undergrad summer would be the perfect time to do so. I really enjoyed the diversity of the tasks as I was given, as well as the range of the client accounts I had worked on. The teams I worked with were always open to questions and willing to explain anything unfamiliar. I was able to meet a wide range of people from varying backgrounds, and was able to gain a deeper understanding of the different career paths that I was interested in.”

“I first applied to the internship as I was on my final year of uni and wanted some experience in industry. The weeks spent at Teneo were incredibly insightful, the tasks I completed gave me a taste of not only the kind of work Teneo does but also the wider industry. I enjoyed the variety in the work I was given and the fact that I had support all the way. The internship thought me new skills and allowed me to strengthen my existing skills. I will not only leave with a great overview of Teneo and consulting but also with great new knowledge on how to navigate the business world and approach people. Overall this was experience was life changing and one I thoroughly enjoyed.”
