One of the largest councils in the UK, Essex County Council (ECC) offers a wide variety of opportunities for employees. At the heart of the Council's work is a commitment to helping the most vulnerable in society. ECC is also committed to economic development of the area, and to preserving history and tradition. Here are ten great reasons why you should further your career with Essex County Council.
1) Gavin's Den
Gavin Jones, Chief Executive of Essex County Council, recently launched Gavin’s Den.
Employees are welcomed to share their big ideas which deliver a commercial benefit to the organisation. This could be schemes to either make or save money and help Essex prosper.
2) Career development
A priority at Essex County Council is to increase educational achievement and enhance skills right across the county. ECC brings talented people on board for internships, apprenticeships or graduate roles. The Council helps its people take their next steps on a rewarding career path.
3) Pride at work
The LGBT network at ECC meets regularly, usually at County Hall. Membership of the network is tiered to ensure that the confidentiality of individual members is respected. It raises awareness of LGBT issues throughout the Council and works to inform the wider transformation strategy.
4) Carers Network
Most of us will either provide care, unpaid, to someone else, or we will need care ourselves. This new network offers information and support to employees who are in a caring role and other interested parties. The network provides a forum where staff can air their views and seek support on carer related matters.
5) Organisational Strategy
ECC's ambition for 2017–2021 is for Essex to be the best local authority in the country. The Council makes its organisational strategy open and clear – you can view it here. To offset reductions in government funding, it manages demand, reshapes and reimagines services and looks for opportunities to generate income.
6) BAME network
This network gives strategic support to the Council. Open to all employees, it signposts members to information, advice and guidance. It offers peer-to-peer support, mentoring and professional development.
7) Beautiful Workspaces
The environment that ECC offers is extraordinary. Its historic building, in the heart of Chelmsford, combines rich tradition with modern facilities. A range of artworks can be found across Chelmsford County Hall and Chelmsford Shire Hall.
8) Support for Disabled Employees
From mobility to mental health, ECC recognises the importance of supporting disabled staff within the Council. The Disabled Employees Network provides a friendly and confidential space for employees to share what affects them in the workplace.
9) A commitment to mental health
Mental health awareness training has been provided to ECC managers. There are many ECC employees who’ve volunteered to become Mental Health First Aiders. Also, employees can get in touch with the Staff Counselling Service.
10) Work life balance
Finding the right role isn’t always easy especially if you need more flexibility for your ‘work/life balance’. ECC offers options that include variable hours, part-time working and home-working. Even some of the Council's most senior staff take advantage of flexible working.
