Karen Pane – Support Worker at DSN
I was first attracted to working at DSN because as a Deaf BSL user myself I felt this would be a great place to work as there would be no communication barrier, also I new they had a Deaf environment and this appealed to me and made me feel more confident in applying to work here. I knew there was a mix between Deaf and hearing staff, but the hearing staff are trained up to BSL Level 2 which means communication is always possible. I was also aware at DSN they have PCA, note takers and interpreters working there which means quick access for Deaf people.
I have been involved in DSN and continued to come back on different occasions for the past 22 years in various roles, this has included various roles such as support worker, 1-1 support for a young lady, outreach work, teaching and now part of the day centre team. Working for DSN throughout the years has given me many opportunities to excel at various roles.
I like most about my job role working at the day centre, I like to work with the clients here and see how staff support and encouragement can help them achieve their goals and aspirations. I have a good rapport with the clients and enjoy when they go on various day trips, this gives them mental stimulation and helps with their involvement in the community.
