London Pride 2018

During June and July 2018 we have been celebrating Pride, our colleagues attended London Pride with enthusiasm and exuberance as we recognised and celebrated the importance of LGBT+ people in our workplaces and communities. We were delighted to see the office floors decorated with the Pride flag colours during this time, our ally numbers increase, and a great turnout at our Pride event.

On 12th July our Pride Committee celebrated Pride with an event in London. Our main focus was the theme of “Bring your whole self to work”. The event included speeches from Mark Foster, Matt Lister, and QBE’s own David Jackson.

Mark Foster, Olympic Swimmer.

Recently, Mark discussed his sexuality openly for the first time and how this had impacted his professional life as an Olympic swimmer. Mark believes all organisations need to understand the importance of diversity and an inclusive culture within the workplace in order to see the best performance from employees. Now, Mark speaks to businesses and organisations about how they can address their diversity strategies to maximise performance levels and wellbeing of staff.

Matt Lister, retired Olympic Slalom Canoeist.

Matt started off his career in 2009 with his crewman Rhys Davies. Both becoming Youth Olympic Champions, since then, Matt has gone on to win medals at European and World championships. He’s now the LGBT athlete ambassador for the British Athletes Commission, a signed model and fitness writer.

David Jackson, Portfolio Manager & Co-Chair of QBE EO's Pride & Allies Committee and representative on the Group's Global Pride Council.

David manages a diverse portfolio of London Market European GL Business. This includes the underwriting of risks across all trade sectors, on both a primary and excess of loss basis. David is also actively involved in the product leadership of the Company's GL offering across the European Branch network.

The guest speakers addressed the topic of ‘Bring your whole self to work’ and examined how this approach improves overall individual performance as well as mental health and general wellbeing. Their common message was that they saw their performance and happiness levels increase in their personal and professional life when they felt comfortable enough to bring their authentic selves to work – and allies as well as colleagues have a key role in enabling and supporting this.

Our Pride network exists to promote and advocate an inclusive workplace culture, supporting all colleagues and however they choose to identify themselves. Pride is the perfect event to remember how far we have come since the Stonewall Riots of 1969 and gives us an indication of how much we still want to achieve in terms of awareness and inclusion of the LGBT+ community.

What's Next for QBE?

Celebrations continue: 5th August is the annual Leeds Pride parade and QBE has a slot in the parade which is open for staff, friends and family to sign up and join in!
